Geotourism is our goal!

Nord-Tromslandet.no wants to contribute to an increase in geotourism, which is defined in issue 34, 2006 of National Geographic as “tourism that sustains or enhances the geographical character of a place—its environment, culture, aesthetics, heritage, and the well-being of its residents”.
Nord-Tromslandet wishes in its identity development of tourism to emphasise the area’s Sami and Kven cultures and the Norwegian coastal heritage. By creating a local tourism with its own geographic character (feeling about a place), we wish to create a type of tourism that emphasises the uniqueness of a place, which is beneficial for both the visitors and the local residents.

Norway was one of the first countries in Europe to officially concentrate on the development of geotourism as a tourism industry. Geotourism expands on the principle of sustainable nature-based tourism to also encompass history and culture.
